The book tells the stories of the Krell family from Klodawa, Poland, and the Murachovski family from Kishinev, Moldova. Based on interviews with members of both families who survived WWII, Shashar has written a story of horror and triumph over evil and despair, and an illustration of the two main ways in which Jews of the post holocaust world rebuilt their lives: in the state of Israel and the United States.
